  INORGANIC SCALE CONTROL

  When inorganic scale appears in the wet end of a paper machine or on equipment surfaces, it can lead to a number of operating problems. Sodium hydroxide deposits generally start as an insoluble, gelatinous material, often referred to as "chemical slime." With time and temperature, aluminum hydroxide dehydrates to form hard scale deposits that can affect paper machine performance.
  
  Barium sulfate scale also can be found throughout paper machine systems, especially in unbleached grades. Calcium scale, whether carbonate-, oxalate-, or sulfate-based, is even more common and frequently forms in alkaline systems. Both types of scale can decrease the operating efficiency of vacuum pumps and washers throughout the papermaking process.
  
  Solenis has developed specific scale inhibitors to control aluminum hydroxide, barium sulfate, and calcium deposition. Our inorganic scale control programs also feature a variety of phosphate-free scale inhibitors, plus a full range of cleaning chemicals for removing existing scale.

  The increased use of recycled content has added to the amount of white pitch and stickies deposition on machine fabrics and rolls.
