IMS INVEST D.O.O. is distributing Vermiculite, a mineralogical name given to hydrated laminar mangesium- aluminum-iron silicates which resemble mica in appearance. When subjected to heat, crude vermiculite has the unusual property of exfoliating or expanded into worm-like particles (the name vermiculite is derived from the Latin 'vermiculare', meaning to breed worms.)

This characteristic of exfoliation, the basis for commercial use of the mineral, is the result of the mechanical separation of the layers by the rapid conversion of contained water to steam. The increase in bulk volume of commercial grades is 8 to 12 times, but individual flakes may exfoliate as many as 30 times. There is a color change during expansion that is dependent upon the composition of the vermiculite and furnace temperature.

MINING PROCESS

Vermiculite is mined from an open cast mine. The mining operation involves digging the vermiculite and transporting it to the plant.
At the Vermiculite Plant, the ore is crushed and dried. Once dried, the vermiculite is passed down a series of screens and winnowers where cross current air streams remove the light vermiculite flakes from the heavier particles.

Composition: Hydrated laminar magnesium-aluminium-iron silicate, (Mg,Ca,K,Fe111)3(Si,Al,Fe111)4O10(OH)2O4H2O, which resembles mica in appearance.
